Preparing for a new school year is more than just supplies and books. Prepare your heart and mind now for back to school.
We often talk about curriculum choices and homeschool planning around this time of the year, but we all know that preparing for a new homeschool year is about more than that. It’s about clearing out our mental clutter and preparing our hearts for the biggest job we have — parenting and teaching our children!
Here are some ideas to prepare your heart and mind for the homeschooling year ahead:
Make some hard choices.
When it comes to finding a curriculum, that is probably one of the hardest parts of homeschooling. My advice would be to make this choice first. If this is your first year homeschooling, research your options. If you’re a continuing homeschooler, take an honest look at what has worked and what hasn’t in the past. Once the curriculum decisions are out of the way, you can move on to the details of planning.
Make a list of possible field trip locations.
One of the things that keeps me on track is making a list. Instead of waiting until the last minute to schedule field trips, I sit down and plan it out. I take a calendar and put out a list of possible field trip locations for that month. Field trips can be a great way to break up the daily routine in your homeschool and provide some fun hands-on homeschooling experiences.
Create a list of resources for yourself.
Don’t forget that homeschool moms need enrichment, too. It’s important that we keep learning so we can teach our children well. Make a list of books you want to read, online courses you’d like to take, and conferences you’d like to attend. Make sure that you have time to grow and renew your mind, too.
Make a homeschooling mom friend.
When you’re a homeschooling mom, the year ahead may seem like a lonely one. Don’t be afraid to reach out and meet other homeschool moms. In my opinion, it’s best to have 1-2 GOOD homeschooling mom friends than a whole circle of “friends” that you’re just trying to fit in with. Isn’t that what we teach our kids?
Start planning now.
One of my biggest tips for moms who need to get ready for next year is this: Don’t wait until next school year gets here, start planning now. It will help you feel prepared and more confident about the year ahead. Start now, so that you’re not stressed later.
Preparing for a new school year is so much more than just books and school supplies. These are some ways you can prepare your heart and mind now for your new school year.
